Funeral Etiquette 101

A funeral is quite a solemn affair, and many grieving individuals attend it. It also means that emotion levels are very high, and people can even get offended quite easily. So if you are attending a funeral, there are certain etiquettes that you need to keep in view.

It is necessary to follow them so that you do not cause any pain or stress to the family members that are already dealing with a lot of sorrow and grief.

  • Wearing appropriate attire is necessary. So do not wear anything bright or very cheerful. It is best to stick to some sober colored clothing and if you are wearing makeup, make sure that it is clean and simple. Steer clear of casual clothes such as t-shirts and jeans, and if children are accompanying you to the funeral, make sure they are dressed appropriately.

  • You must always be punctual when attending a funeral. Plan things in such a way that you are at the venue at least 15 to 20 minutes before the casual time. Take things like travel time and traffic conditions into consideration before you leave home. It would mean that you can arrive at the funeral service on time.

  • If you feel that you would not make it on time, do not disrupt the proceeding. Stand a little outside the entrance when you arrive or if you find a place at the back of the venue, take a seat there quietly. It is the best way to show your respect to the family that is grieving.

  • Ensure that you keep your phone on silent so that the messages and calls that come in do not disrupt the event. Do not take or make any calls during the service, as that can also seem disrespectful. Do not keep looking at your phone screen or messaging people until the funeral is over.
