Coping With The Death Of A Sibling

Coping With The Death Of A Sibling
Siblings have a special bond that is unlike any other relationship within the family. They are often your best friends, companions, defenders, competitors, and so much more. Despite this, sibling grief doesn’t have the same level of support as other types of grief. Many struggle to find a community that can help them through this process. At Jerry Spears, we have seen many siblings suffer the loss and offer this advice:

Don’t Underestimate Your Grief

Sibling death can have a significant impact on your life, even if you had a contentious relationship with them. Research shows that the loss of a sibling can affect a person's mental health, self-esteem, development, and social life. It is worse if you're not given time to mourn the death properly. There's a general expectation that individuals who have lost their siblings need to step up and support their parents. Support your family as much as you can, but make sure you have some space to work through your grief.

Take Some Time Away

It is a good idea to take some time out from your familiar environments and gain some distance from the family. You can do this by taking a weekend trip or spending a few hours every day away from home. This allows you to focus on yourself and get away from the constant reminders of your sibling's demise.

Talk To A Friend

A friend or partner won’t have the same attachments towards your sibling as your family does. Consider discussing your feelings with a close friend. You won't have to watch your words or hide any unresolved feelings from them. Sibling relationships can be rocky, and sometimes you need an impartial party to help you work through any lingering feelings.
