What To Do When A Loved One Is Near The End Of Their Life

Death isn’t something people are comfortable discussing and when it comes to their own death, most feel a certain amount of trepidation and unease. If someone very close to you is near their end of life, it can be extremely difficult for you to manage the situation as well.

An End Of Life Conversation

The best way to deal with this is to have an end of life conversation with the person. While this is generally easier said than done, there are a number of reasons you should consider this such as:
  • When death is imminent, and if the person is ill or in pain, discussing it with them can help ease their pain. The idea is to remove the fear factor connected with death so that the person doesn’t become overwhelmed.
  • There are times when some people are unable to make sound decisions when they are nearing their end of life. If they are too weak or too ill, it's important that you have some conversation with them. Do this at a time when they seem to be in the frame of mind to actually have that conversation. Calm them down and ensure they are at peace with themselves.
  • You can contact a funeral home that offers pre-planned funeral services. This can give your loved one the chance to decide how they want their funeral to be. The important thing is that the end of journey should be as per their preferences.
  • The discussions and talks you have with your loved one should steer clear of topics that will add to their sorrow. If they have had some conflict with someone (a family member or friend), you could consider calling them to meet the ailing family member. This may sometimes be a good time to resolve that conflict and give the dying person some peace of mind in their last moments.
