Etiquette for Social Media Condolences

Today, many people use social media extensively and stay in touch with acquaintances, extended family, and friends that may be living in an altogether different region or country as well. The Internet has shrunk the world and people share thoughts, messages, pictures etc. via social media.

But it also becomes a platform for people to share condolences when someone they know passes away. If you are considering sharing your condolences via any of these platforms, it’s important to follow certain etiquette. Here are some things to keep in view:
  • Don’t rush to post your condolences online. It’s best that you wait till the time the family or a representative of the family makes an official announcement. Sometimes the grieving person isn’t really ready to share this news and deal with the flood of condolences, making it important for you to wait until the right time.
  • When a close friend confides in you and informs you that a family member or someone they loved has passed away, quell the urge to post information about it on social media. It’s necessary that you respect that person and wait till they are ready to share this information.
  • Make sure that you keep your condolences private. Even after someone has made an announcement about the death, it's best that you contact them via private/direct messages rather than public ones.
This lends a personal touch to the gesture. Simply let them know that they have a shoulder to cry on in case they feel the need to vent their frustration or cry their heart out. This is probably a better and more dignified way to offer support.
