The Importance of an End of Life Conversation

Discussing an end-of-life event with someone you love isn’t an easy task. Most people don’t even want to begin thinking in that direction and almost shrug off the thought of someone close to them passing away. But the fact is that an end-of-life conversation can actually be beneficial to the family members, especially the person who is seriously ill or is very old.

End of life- why discuss it?

The last weeks of a person’s life need to be free from stress and it’s important to try to keep the person in good spirits. While this may seem like a Herculean task, trying to push the topic into the shadows isn’t going to be of much help to anyone. This is why it’s best to have this discussion with the person on time. There are some distinct benefits to doing do:
  • The person can talk about his/her requests and desires before they breathe their last and there would be nothing to speculate about.
  • A discussion such as this helps the ailing or elderly person come to terms with what is inevitable and they can then make the best of the rest of their days.
  • Not many people realize this, but an end-of-life discussion can also sometimes help in bringing estranged family members closer.

Things to discuss

Some of the things you can discuss include:

  • Whether the person wants a burial or a cremation.
  • Do they want a wake, memorial service or wake?
  • Where does the person want to be buried?
  • Does he/she have any special request for some specific decorations or music or whether they want to donate something to charity etc?
  • What they would like to do about their possessions and assets.
