Veterans serving in the military receive several benefits from the
organization and these include benefits for funerals. It’s important for the
veteran and their family members to be aware of the benefits and understand
what kind of aid they can expect from the government. Here’s a small guide that
can help you determine what kind of benefits you’re eligible for under
different circumstances:
1. What all Veterans can Expect
Veterans that have served or are actively serving in the military will
get a burial in a national cemetery at any location of their choice, a flag,
and a granite or marble headstone. The family members don’t need to bear the
expenses for opening and closing the grave, setting the grave marker, or the
liner.
2. Veterans That Died During Active Duty
The military bears all the expenses for death on active duty and the
next-of-kin can expect around $100,000 in gratuity. The expenses covered
include:
- Preparing the body
- Transporting it to the cemetery
- The cost of the casket
- Interment
- The cost of adding a marker
3. Veterans who Have Died from Service-Related Injuries
Veterans who have died outside of active duty due to service-related
injuries get $2,000 of burial allowance. This allowance can be used for hiring
a funeral director, transportation to the cemetery, and buying the casket. The
veteran can be buried at the national cemetery at no cost. Other expenses are
determined on a case-to-case basis.
4. What Can Veterans who Have Died of Causes Unrelated to the Military Expect
They’re not eligible for any other benefits aside from a burial in the
national cemetery, a flag, and a headstone.
